September 9, 2020 Message from the SUP National Executive Committee

Following next week’s announcement of the president-elect voting outcome and the swearing in ceremony, the next major event will be Area training for Chapter presidents, past-presidents, presidents-elect, Secretaries and/or Secretary/treasurers, and other Board members that the Chapter Executive Board would like to invite to attend via zoom.

The schedule we have adopted is for two Saturdays and one Thursday evening.  On each of the two Saturdays we will conduct two area training meetings so that we will complete the training in five sessions.  If there are AVPs, Chapter Board Members or National Directors who cannot attend on the scheduled day for your assigned area training, please let Pat know at National and she will furnish you with the sign-in information for another area training which may better fit your schedule.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, October 17, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the Ogden Area with AVPs Bob Wall, Val Roberts and Alan Turner.
  • Saturday, October 17, at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Provo Area with AVPs Dan Adams and LaRon Taylor.
  • Saturday, October 24, at 9:00 a.m. the Rexburg Area with AVPs Martel Grover and David Williams.
  • Saturday, October 24, 11:30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m. the Southern Utah Area with AVPs David Isom, Harold Shirley, Robert Oliver and Harvey Zilm.
  • Thursday October 29, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the Salt Lake Area with AVPs Paul Bambrough, Joe Nelson, Dil Strasser and Steve Kruman.

AVPs be advised that you should plan for the first hour and fifteen to twenty minutes and leave the National Executive Council forty to forty-five minutes for National business. We would like to emphasize staying connected with our membership, including virtual meetings, regular communication, small, safe treks, joining on-line, and sharing the National Calendar and what that means for Chapter scheduling.

AVPs, after conferring with each other and your chapter officers, please share your agendas with us at National by emailing your plans to  Assign someone for the invocation, the pledge, a minute if you choose to, and of course, a benediction.  One of the AVPs should conduct the meeting.  AVPs decide among yourselves whom that should be and be sure to inform us who will be fulfilling these assignments.

We need to stay connected.  We are attempting to do so by the Newsletter, the Trail Marker and our amazing Pioneer magazine.  Of course, we are using zoom to continue our regular meetings such as the Executive Council, National Board Meetings, Finance Committee Meetings, and Editorial Board Meetings.  In the coal industry, a safety precaution to help miners find an escape route following an event which obstructs vision, used to be to have them hold hands and follow the wall.

In the last fifteen years a system has been developed to secure a lifeline to the mine wall which the miners can hold to and find their way to safety.  We also need a lifeline to our membership during these difficult times.  We hope you are maintaining contact and providing encouragement and information to our membership.  Let’s not let our members stray off the safe and secure path.  We need to stay strong and stay fixed to SUP.  The study of our pioneer legacy will help us continue faithful and can be influential in our holding to the Iron Rod.

Have a great week and stay well.
