August 26, 2020 Message from the SUP National Executive Committee

Dear members, we are in the midst of a drought in the American west.  Let’s unite our faith and prayers and pray for relief in the form of cooler temperatures and much needed rain.  During this summer we have seen catastrophic fires throughout the west, including several in Utah.  An end to the drought would be most favorable in alleviating this condition.
In the year 2021 we will be celebrating the 125 anniversary of Utah gaining statehood.  In January 1896 the celebrations were phenomenal, almost beyond belief.  Utahans had worked and waited anxiously for almost 50 years to gain statehood.   The Pioneer winter issue will be devoted to Utah’s Constitutional Convention and the events leading to statehood.  We are looking forward to that issue.

If it is possible to hold our National Symposium in the spring of 2021, Utah’s road to statehood would be an intriguing topic that will be considered.
The attendance at the zoom Board Meeting on August 18th was again outstanding.  We greatly appreciate all of the program directors and AVP’s for their devoted, dedicated efforts during this difficult time.  At that meeting we did approve a new policy that members should know about and help us to implement.

This policy statement came about because a past member was contacting Chapter Presidents seeking phone numbers, emails and addresses of chapter members in order to solicit donations for a project not approved by National SUP.  This policy does not affect ongoing interaction between and among chapters or members interacting with other chapter members.  Interaction regarding treks, meetings and local events is encouraged.

Policy:

All correspondence concerning any “National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers,” program or activity including, but not limited to the following: SUP elections, solicitations, programs, public announcements, treks, symposiums, etc., should be approved by the SUP Executive Council.  Each request will need to be detailed and in writing, and submitted to the Executive Council of the SUP for review and approval.  If approved, the requesting member, person or chapter will only receive a list of current SUP chapter presidents and will respect the privacy of individual members of the SUP.  Requests will be retained on file for review and follow up.

We are now in the final week of voting for National President-elect.  Remember ballots must be postmarked no later than midnight August 31 in order to be valid.  If you have not already voted, you are urged to do so.  Our two outstanding candidates, John Clayton and Larry Gibson, are both well qualified and deserving of your attention and careful consideration.  Thanks to the many who have voted.
